From Mountain Peaks to Coffee Cups: Hacienda El Obraje’s Award-Winning Geisha

The journey from the coffee cherry to your cup is a profound narrative of dedication and artistry. Each step—from the nurturing of the beans to the moment they reach your hands—is imbued with the passion and care of those who make it possible. Our latest release from Colombia’s Nariño region beautifully illustrates this deep connection, highlighting both the personal and cross-cultural relationships that enrich our coffee experience.

In the highlands of Nariño, where the mountains stretch into the sky and the air is rich with the scent of coffee, a remarkable story of vision and perseverance unfolds. Hacienda’s El Obraje’s Geisha is one chapter in the story of Pablo Andrés Guerrero Pérez, an architect turned agricultural innovator, whose commitment to his homeland has transformed the region's coffee landscape. Inspired by childhood memories and driven by a desire to rejuvenate his family’s land, Pablo transitioned from real estate to the high-altitude fields of Hacienda El Obraje, embracing the challenge of growing coffee at 2,200 meters above sea level.

Our inaugural direct trade partnership with Pablo began through a shared passion for exceptional coffee. His dedication shines through in the Geisha, a coffee that earned first place in the 2021 Cup of Excellence. This remarkable offering, grown at an impressive altitude, is celebrated for its classic lavender florality and sweet honeydew finish. Its vibrant acidity, with notes of pomelo and passionfruit, reflects the meticulous cultivation and processing that Pablo and his family have perfected.

Earlier this year, we had the privilege of hosting Pablo’s sister and her son, who visited to share their story and experiences. Their visit allowed us to delve into the intricate processes behind their coffee, from the unique terroir of Nariño to their commitment to sustainable farming practices. This encounter was more than a professional exchange; it was a heartfelt connection that deepened our appreciation of their exceptional coffee.

During our cupping sessions,  Hacienda El Obraje Geisha revealed complex layers of jasmine and lavender, leading to a delightful honeydew sweetness. This experience not only highlighted the coffee’s exceptional quality but also underscored the Guerrero family's dedication, making each cup a direct link to their story.

When brewed as a pour-over, Hacienda El Obraje Geisha unfolds with remarkable clarity. The floral notes of lavender and the bright acidity of pomelo come alive, culminating in a sweet honeydew finish. This preparation method allows the coffee’s nuanced flavors to shine through, offering a cup that is both captivating and elegant.

The relationships and collaborative projects we’ve cultivated highlight the dynamic and enriching connections we’re committed to building through our direct trade coffee program. Our experiences with producers like Pablo Andrés Guerrero deepen our understanding and appreciation of Colombian coffee. Each cup reflects not only the exceptional quality of the beans but also the meaningful relationships and shared passions that bring them to life. We invite you to explore these exceptional offerings and savor the extraordinary flavors and personal stories that make each cup of Apollon’s Gold coffee truly special.
